From passive to POWER
We’ve all heard the myth before: it takes 21 days to form a new habit. Some experts say 28, others say 66 or even 90. Regardless of how much time you put into it, there’s something much more pressing in forming a new habit. You have to WANT IT.
For example, I used to hate working out. No, I LOATHED it. The dread would set in before going to bed, which resulted in a bad night’s sleep. When the alarm went off, the first thought was always an excuse – I need more sleep or it’s too dark to go to the gym. I even had the classic I have to wash my hair excuse (I know some of you can relate to this one).
When I commit to something, I am able to push excuses aside, but a thought is always looming: how long will this commitment last? My longest workout streak to date is probably 3 years. Yes, I committed 3 years to working out 3-5 days a week. My clothes fit great, I loved the look of my shoulders and I felt good. There was just one problem. I still HATED it. The second I gave myself a few days off, that was it. My streak was over. Habit broken. I knew I wanted to want to work out, but I couldn’t shift my mindset from “have to” to “want to.”
Until now.
At the beginning of 2022, I did a great intention-setting exercise with my mastermind group. In the center, was our “I am statement” for the year. As you know, I’m a big fan of yearly mantras, so in big bold (purple) letters I wrote: I MAKE IT HAPPEN. I LET IT HAPPEN.
Around the outside were 6 categories:
Physical
Relational
Emotional
Spiritual
Intellectual
Financial
As I thought about how I could bring my mantra to life “physically”, I decided to take a POWERFUL STANCE and shift my mindset from passive to POWER.
Before, I WAS NOT ACTIVELY taking charge of my negative thoughts. Instead, I was letting them take charge of me.
Not anymore. I am in charge. I MAKE IT HAPPEN.
I used to get up at 6:30 AM 3 times a week, dragging my feet to make a 7:15 AM workout #passive
I now get up at 5 AM 5 times a week without a thought to hit snooze and am at the gym by 5:45 AM #POWER
I no longer have to work out – I want to.
What is a new habit you want to commit to? What mindset would help get you there?
You have the power to make it happen.
And if you aren’t sure where to begin, let’s chat.
